First United Mission
First United Church is located in the Downtown Eastside. It provides counselling, food, clothing and other necessities to the hundreds of people who come through the doors. Thanks to the contributions of clothing, toiletries, household items, books, & food from our congregation over the past year, we have delivered fourteen van loads of these items to First United. Loonies and Toonies collected in the money jar located in the Narthex have enabled us to purchase twenty-four cases of food for First United.
Volunteers from our congregation get together once a month to make sandwiches which are immediately delivered to First United.
Each month, from September to April, members of our congregation join with St David’s United Church in order to participate in the “Out of the Cold” hot meal programme. Casseroles are made in our church kitchen and members from our congregation travel to First United to serve a hot meal to over 150 hungry people from the downtown east side.
Over the past few years instead of giving each other Christmas gifts some members of our congregation purchased socks, underwear, toques, clothing and toiletries. The result was a van load of much appreciated necessities which helped make Christmas a little brighter for a lot of needy people
