Movie Nights
We occasionally hire a movie and along with drinks popcorn etc sell tickets in aid of a particular charitable event. Our Relay for Life has previously benefited from this, with all the money raised going to fund cancer research.
Golf: All Nations Cup
We have initiated our very own golfing tournament. Folks are invited to enter teams according to the national identity that they most identify with. The idea is to have as many people have as much fun as possible, while raising as much money as possible. While still getting off the ground, this has the potential of being a huge amount of fun as well as a significant fundraiser. We have a really handsome trophy with ‘Scotland’ inscribed as the winner for the last four consecutive years. Is there a credible challenger out there?
Sun Peaks Skiing Trip
Every year, mid winter, a group of brave NLUC’ers travel across the Coquihalla to Sun Peaks to carve up the slopes and have a lot of fun. Whether consciously or not, this is done in the name of Our Lord and we are blessed to have this ministry in our congregation. Please speak to Brian Gibbard if you would like to know more about this. (That’s not them in the photo!)
Men’s Group
NLUC men have traditionally had a men’s group that met once a month on Saturday mornings for breakfast. This would be a time of sharing as well as occasional input from guest speakers. Whilst this has stopped recently, there are those who would revive this practice in 2009. Please speak to the church office if you are interested in becoming involved with this.
Java Group
There is a group of both present and past NLUC members who meet informally for coffee each Friday morning. This significant relational group of friends is a source of fun as well as mutual care and support for those involved.
Special Teas
Valentine’s Day, the Christmas season, Spring, are all opportunities for us to come together for a special tea. Wonderful eats as well as lively conversation ensue as old friends see one another and new friends are made. Especially welcomed are those of a certain age who aren’t able to get out too much anymore.
Ladies and Guests Night Out
In 2007, the Stewardship Committee decided to restore “Ladies Night Out” to our church calendar . It had been a wonderful social event in past years. In February 2009, the second fun-filled evening was held under the new name.
The 150 guests enjoyed a wonderful meal served by the men of the congregation and the opportunity to meet old and new friends was appreciated by all. The festivities included a live auction and a silent auction with many wonderful items of products and services on which to bid. We were truly blessed by the generous donations of our members and friends in the community. In addition, the names of all present were eligible for a reverse draw which distributed many prizes including a grand prize for the last ticket drawn. The substantial monies raised permitted our church to support many wonderful ministries.
Future events are to be coordinated by a new ministry team staffed by volunteers attracted to the fun and worthwhile goals of this ministry.
Candy Cane Fair
Preparation for this long time November event starts in early summer as members of the congregation begin to make and freeze pies. Five hundred large pies and one hundred smaller pies were made and sold in 2008. In addition, lovely crafts and a great variety of other items donated by members were sold at the fair.
All who participated in this event enjoy the wonderful comradeship and take pleasure in raising significant funds to allow our church to do God’s work in the community and abroad.
Souper Sunday
We celebrate all our birthdays one Sunday each year – with soup and birthday cake! Over 100 people meet at long tables each labelled with a month of the year. We join those celebrating their birthdays in our particular month. There is lots of eating, sharing, laughing as we party together as one huge family.
It’s particularly special to have people from different generations interacting as they share in this meal, as well as discovering and introducing the congregation to their ‘twins’ and ‘triplets’, (people sharing birthdays).
Concerts & Special Events
We were delighted to have our Music Director host a special fundraising concert in Jan 2009, entitled ‘Spirit of Russia’. It featured superb instrumental, voice, and dance from a whole number of people, all excellent. The church was almost completely filled with a hugely appreciative audience. It was our privilege to play host in Christ’s name to these folks from our wider community, and we expect to hold more of these in 2009.
Tanzania – Kyla Brophy Concert
It was our privilege to host this fabulous concert in aid of orphanage funds. Kyla, a musically gifted young woman (ex student of Rob Karr) with a particular heart of love for Tanzanian orphans brought along a number of her talented teachers and friends to raise money for this worthy cause.
There is room for other performances by folks associated with NLUC and we look forward to see this fun, fundraising ministry develop.
