Operation Christmas Child
This Sunday, Nov 1, the children’s program will be launching Operation Christmas Child, a program which provides shoeboxes of simple gifts to children in desperate need overseas. There will be shoeboxes available this Sunday for anyone to take home and fill with items for children in need in South/Central America and West Africa.
For more information on this program please visit www.samaritanspurse.ca, a Christian international relief organization. The turnaround time for this project is short. We are asking that boxes be returned to the church by Nov 15, so boxes can be delivered to the collection centre during that week. Alternatively, if you wish to bring items to the church, the children will be packaging items in boxes on Sunday Nov 8.
If packing a shoebox, please label whether it intended for a boy or girl, and with the child’s age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14.
A variety of the following items is suggested:
- School supplies: e.g. pencils, pens, pencil crayons, notepads, picture books
- Toys and other gifts: e.g. stuffed animals, small musical instruments, hair clips, toy jewelry, t-shirts, socks, and candy (loose, individually wrapped , hard candy in a sealable bag).
- Hygiene items: please place soap in a sealable bag.
A personal note and/or photo can be included in the shoebox, if you wish.
It is asked that you do not include: toothpaste, food, chewy/crumbly/soft candy, gum, used items, decks of playing cards, liquids or items that could leak, melt, freeze or break, or items that could scare or harm a child.
In addition to the items, an optional donation is suggested, in order to cover project costs (including shipping). $7 is a suggested amount and donations can be included in an envelope in the box (cash or cheque) and can also be made online.

Is there more to life than this?

We are offering you, our North Lonsdale congregation, and through you our wider community, an opportunity to revisit/test/question/explore/celebrate the roots of our faith. This will be in the form of a brand new Alpha course! I have ordered a set of the revised material and must say that it looks very good. Why not join us? This would also be an excellent opportunity to invite that buddy/neighbour/family member with all those questions to come along as well.
We will be meeting on Wednesday, September 23rd, to explore what it will involve, before beginning the course the following week, from Wednesday Sept 30th. The course will run each Wednesday night for 10 weeks until Dec 2nd. We will begin with dinner at 6.00pm, enjoy input (multimedia, live etc) from 6.45pm, interact at our tables as well as within the group as a whole, and end by 9.00pm. The cost of dinner as well as of all material is by donation.
If you feel at all interested in joining us, or even that you may enjoy being a table facilitator, please to let me know. Absolutely no previous knowledge or experience is necessary – just an openness and willingness to care about others as we question/challenge/explore our faith – oh yes, as well as being committed to having a really good time together as we grow!

A Youth Road Trip Adventure?
Actually, Road Trip doesn’t really describe it. It’s sort of a Car Rally/Amazing Race-style/Video Scavenger Hunt.
Youth are divided into teams. The teams travel to different North Shore locations and use a camcorder to document their experiences as they achieve a series of tasks. The tasks range from serious and/or strange to downright silly!
The event concludes with a Barbecue & Concert at North Lonsdale United where the teams will get to present their video escapades to the other teams on a giant screen.
This event is open to youth in grades 7-12.
The name of the game is Fun… no wait, actually, it’s MOVE!

Reachout To Africa – May 23, 2009
Four of our young people have been given the opportunity to travel to Africa together with a number of other Canadians to work with an organization that provides direct support to the aftermath of HIV/AIDS. They work with orphans and Vulnerable children providing them with skills, knowledge and counseling to help them survive the pandemic. Our team will be travelling to South Africa and working in the province of Mpumalanga near a small town called White River during June and July. Please see more details about the project at reachout2africa.org
We are having several fund raising activities to help cover their expenses. The first one is a dinner with Entertainment called “African Indaba”. Please call the office for tickets 604 985 4911.
